Program History
The University of Colorado (CU) Diabetes Fellowship Program was established in 2020 with the overarching goal of training motivated individuals in the care of patients with all types of diabetes, diabetes complications, preventive care, and associated comorbidities including obesity and lipid disorders. Fellows integrate outpatient and inpatient clinical experiences, evidence-based practice and didactics, with discussion of relevant research to develop appropriate management and follow-up plans for patients with diabetes referred for outpatient and inpatient consultation. This fellowship provides a balanced and structured experience in the basic care and specialized management of diabetes including use of diabetes technologies in diverse clinical settings. One fellow will be accepted for the 2023-2024 academic year.
Program Curriculum
The fellowship experience includes several components: clinical experiences, didactics, and a scholarly activity in quality improvement and/or clinical research. The clinical experiences are mainly outpatient, at the University of Colorado Hospital, Barbara Davis Center, the Rocky Mountain VA Medical Center, and Denver Health, with core clinical teaching faculty. Fellows see patients in diabetes-focused continuity clinics and specialty clinics in diabetes in pregnancy, renal, cardiovascular/lipid, weight management, ophthalmology, and wound care. Fellows take a few weeks of call after-hours from home, supervised by the diabetes attending. Fellows also rotate on the inpatient Glucose Management Team at the University of Colorado Hospital seeing complex patients with diabetes and stress hyperglycemia. Didactics include formal teaching sessions as well as informal clinic/bedside teaching, weekly case conferences, a monthly Diabetes Clinical Conference, and relevant Endocrinology and Medical Grand Rounds. Fellows are expected to present a case discussion at the Endocrinology Grand Rounds and participate actively in diabetes conferences. The scholarly activity is a diabetes-related quality improvement or clinical research project, and fellows present findings toward the end of the fellowship year. Attendance at the Practical Ways to Achieve Targets in Diabetes Care (ATDC) conference in July (start of fellowship year) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions in June (end of fellowship year) are expected. Fellows meet regularly with the program director and associate director, and receive periodic evaluations. The fellowship program undergoes continuous improvement based on feedback from fellows, faculty and staff.
